The Avant Garde Project is a series of 20th-century classical-experimental-electroacoustic torrents digitized from LPs whose music has in most cases never been released on CD, and so is effectively inaccessible to the vast majority of music listeners today. This is wild stuff, so check it out if you've never heard this sort of music before. The analog rig used to extract the sound from the grooves is near state-of-the-art, producing almost none of the tracking distortion or surface noise normally associated with LPs. AGP1-105 are now available for direct download in the archive at dream.cs.bath.ac.uk/AvantGardeProject ======================================= AGP109 is a transcription of an out-of-print CD of Horatiu Radulescu's Inner Time II, for seven B-flat clarinets. Like AGP85, it is brought to you by the AGP's global network of Radulescu partisans--this one having started down the fiber-optic pipes from New Jersey in the USA. Inner Time II is based on a 42-pitch overtone-based scale with each of the seven clarinets employing 6 of the 42 notes. It starts and ends with combinations of clarinets patiently elaborating subtly shifting microtonal intervals. I love that sort of stuff, but there is an austerity in these sections that reminds me of Gregorian Chant, and it takes some endurance to give it my full attention minute after minute. About halfway through the 56-minute work, there is a "valley" section in which the clarinets explore arpeggios in a lower register, producing a sound like an aeolian harp. I have to admit that this section is a big relief when it comes. The torrent includes a PDF file with scans of the CD booklet notes in three languages. 05 - Inner Time II [56:02] NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, this recording is currently out of print. If you know otherwise, please let me know ASAP, as I do not wish any artists to be deprived of the royalties that they so richly deserve.
