AGP113 continues our tribute to Othmar Schoeck with recordings of his two string quartets, performed by the Neues Zürcher Quartett and transcribed from a PAN LP (130048). Another recording of these works is avilable on CD, but this one appears never to have been re-released. It's a clear, warm recording from 1981. The LP packs almost half an hour of music per side, so there's mild tracking distortion in the last couple of minutes of each side, but it's not too bad. And otherwise the LP is in great shape. Schoeck's string quartets are both mature works (from 1913 and 1923), and to varying degrees bring to mind the quartets of Debussy, Zemlinsky, Janacek, and Martinu.

The installment includes a PDF file with scans of the liner notes from the LPs included in this and the other two Schoeck installments. If you like what you hear in these installments, check out commercially available recordings of Elegie (a lieder collection) and Penthesilea (his most celebrated opera).
