The Avant Garde Project is a series of 20th-century classical-experimental-electroacoustic torrents digitized from LPs whose music has in most cases never been released on CD, and so is effectively inaccessible to the vast majority of music listeners today. This is wild stuff, so check it out if you've never heard this sort of music before. The analog rig used to extract the sound from the grooves is near state-of-the-art, producing almost none of the tracking distortion or surface noise normally associated with LPs. AGP1-55 are now available for direct download in the archive at dream.cs.bath.ac.uk/AvantGardeProject AGP56-58 and other recent AGP installments are available at http://thepiratebay.org/user/loudav ======================================= AGP59 features three of Morton Subotnick's works for instruments and ghost electronics, supplementing those included in AGP6. The "ghost" electronics make no sound on their own, but alter the amplitude, frequency, and location of any sounds produced as the electronic score is playing. In his works for this technology, Subotnick explored the effects of these manipulations on a variety of instrumental combinations, from single instruments to chamber ensembles. The rather simple electronic manipulations in the "ghost" electronics nevertheless produce an interesting range of timbres, depending on the tone color of the instruments being manipulated. For more information, see the liner notes included with AGP6 at: !This installment comprises three works of the fourteen that Subotnick composed for instruments and ghost electronics. Passages of the Beast has Ramon Kireilis on clarinet. Parallel Lines has Laurence Trott on piccolo with members of the Buffalo Philharmonic and Buffalo Creative Associates, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The Wild Beasts has Miles Anderson on trombone and Virko Baley on piano. As a bittorrent-only bonus track, I have added a recording of Morton Feldman's King of Denmark, performed by Yasukazu Amemiya on percussion. This was left over from my transcription of an LP that was included in AGP20. It doesn't necessarily fit with the Subotnick, but there was room for it in this installment. It's lovely. The torrent includes a text files with the liner notes from the three LPs from which the Subotnick works were transcribed. All three LPs are in excellent condition, with little pressing noise. Equipment used for A/D conversion: Lyra Helikon phono cartridge, Linn LP12/Lingo turntable, Linn Ittok tonearm, Audioquest LeoPard tonearm cable, PS Audio PS2 preamplifier, Kimber PBJ interconnect, M-Audio Audiophile USB A/D converter. 05 - Passages of the Beast [19:28] 06 - Parallel Lines [15:37] 07 - The Wild Beasts [26:55] 08 - Morton Feldman, King of Denmark [6:00] NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, these recordings are currently out of print. If you know otherwise, please let me know ASAP, as I do not wish any artists to be deprived of the royalties that they so richly deserve.
