The Avant Garde Project is a series of 20th-century classical-experimental-electroacoustic torrents digitized from LPs whose music has in most cases never been released on CD, and so is effectively inaccessible to the vast majority of music listeners today. This is wild stuff, so check it out if you've never heard this sort of music before. The analog rig used to extract the sound from the grooves is near state-of-the-art, producing almost none of the tracking distortion or surface noise normally associated with LPs. AGP1-62 are now available for direct download in the archive at dream.cs.bath.ac.uk/AvantGardeProject ======================================= AGP67 is the first of two dedicated to the great British composer Alexander Goehr, who studied with both Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez, and who was one of the founders of New Music Manchester in 1953, along with Peter Maxwell Davies, Harrison Birtwistle, and others. I would describe Goehr as a "composer's composer" in that there is nothing flashy in his compositions, but they are exceptionally well constructed and full of musical interest. Most of the works included in AGP67-68 are tonal. While a number of works by Goehr are available on CD, much of his earlier work is not. This installment features works for chamber ensembles and solo piano from three LPs. The recordings in tracks 01-04 are particularly nice, with negligible tracking distortion or surface noise. The torrent includes a PDF file with liner notes from the three LPs, as follows: Argo ZRG 748 (pp.1-2) Auracle AUC 1005 (p.7) EMI Odeon ASD 645 (p.8) Equipment used for A/D conversion: Lyra Helikon phono cartridge, Linn LP12/Lingo turntable, Linn Ittok tonearm, Audioquest LeoPard tonearm cable, PS Audio PS2 preamplifier, Kimber PBJ interconnect, M-Audio Audiophile USB A/D converter. 01 - String Quartet No. 2, Op. 23, 1967 [22:51] 02 - Piano Trio, Op. 20, 1966 [19:48] 03 - Capriccio, Op. 6, 1957 [5:42] 04 - Nonomiya, Op. 27, 1969 [15:10] 05 - Piano Sonata, Op. 2, 1953 [13:38] NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, these recordings are currently out of print.
