The Avant Garde Project is a series of 20th-century classical-experimental-electroacoustic torrents digitized from LPs whose music has in most cases never been released on CD, and so is effectively inaccessible to the vast majority of music listeners today. This is wild stuff, so check it out if you've never heard this sort of music before. The analog rig used to extract the sound from the grooves is near state-of-the-art, producing almost none of the tracking distortion or surface noise normally associated with LPs. AGP1-84 are now available for direct download in the archive at dream.cs.bath.ac.uk/AvantGardeProject NOTE: AGP86 will be the last installment of 2007. I will be taking a few weeks off to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany on Mount Athos, returning probably on January 11, 2008. ======================================= AGP85 features the Romanian-born French composer Horatiu Radulescu. It is a transcription of a CD requested by an AGP partisan, and fulfilled through the generosity of the global network of AGP partisans--this time emanating from the UTC-8h time zone. Radulescu was just coming into his own towards the end of the LP era, so before listening to this CD I had only heard one LP of his work (an LP that is still nominally in print on Editions RZ, BTW). The tracks included in this CD are scored for between 1 and 72 flutes, one also featuring a sound icon (read the notes). Radulescu's "spectral technique of composition" makes extensive use of microtones to distribute sound energy across the acoustic spectrum. The torrent includes a PDF file with the text of the booklet notes included with the CD, scanned from a photocopy of those notes. 01 - Dizzy Divinity I [13:14] 02 - Byzantine Prayer [20:11] 03 - Frenetico il longing di amare [24:28] 04 - Capricorn's Nostalgic Crickets [17:42] NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, these recordings are currently out of print. If you know otherwise, please let me know ASAP, as I do not wish any artists to be deprived of the royalties that they so richly deserve.
